Deeply inspired by real-life experience and filmed on Leila McDougall’s own farm and local hometown of Tatyoon, VIC, Just a Farmer is a powerful Australian drama that explores the unseen challenges faced by farming families and rural communities. Through an honest and heartfelt story, the film highlights the emotional toll of hardship, isolation, and mental health struggles while celebrating resilience, hope, and the strength of community. Thought-provoking and deeply moving, Just a Farmer encourages meaningful conversations about mental wellbeing and reminds us that no one should face their challenges alone.  McDougall was inspired to write the film after witnessing firsthand the mental health challenges, isolation, and rates of suicide among rural men, including personal family experiences with suicide and trauma.
