Burdekin Christian College presents

SEUSSICAL JR.

Friday 2 August - 6:30pm

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.  Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.  Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Melinda Schneider’s, A Farewell to Doris, is a heartfelt tribute to Doris Day. This nostalgic concert celebration will include timeless hits as well as a number of Doris’ big band standards....
A Farewell to Doris

featured

Melinda Schneider returns to the stage in 2024 to pay tribute to the legendary Doris Day.

The world lost one of its biggest stars with the passing of Doris Day. A legend of stage, screen and song, Doris died aged 97, leaving behind an incredible body of work, including iconic movies and unforgettable songs.

Doris Day, “the girl next door”, had millions of fans around the world, none bigger than chart-topping Australian singer songwriter Melinda Schneider, who has recorded two albums of Doris’ songs, co-written and starred in a theatre show based on Doris’ life, and done sell-out tours celebrating Doris’ work.

Melinda Schneider’s, A Farewell To Doris, is a heartfelt tribute to Doris Day. This nostalgic concert celebration will include timeless hits as well as a number of Doris’ big band standards.

Melinda’s love affair with Doris Day started when she saw Calamity Jane when she was just eight. “I thought she was the best of everything a woman can be, and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her,” Melinda says. “Whenever I revisit some of her old movies, I’m transported back to that place, a place of happiness and pure joy.”

In 2010, Melinda released the acclaimed tribute album Melinda Does Doris – A Tribute To Doris Day, which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Jazz and Blues chart, remaining there for 9 weeks.

The following year, Melinda starred in her own hugely successful original theatre show, DORIS, Doris Day – So Much More Than The Girl Next Door, which she wrote with David Mitchell of Dusty/Shout  fame. The show played to packed houses across the country, including a sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall in 2012.

Before the show was staged, Melinda sent Doris the script. “I wanted to make sure she was happy with the way we had portrayed her, and she came back giving me the thumbs up, which made me very happy.

Following the successful capital city seasons, Melinda created a concert production of the show, Melinda Does Doris: A Tribute to Doris Day, which has toured to appreciative audiences in cities and towns all around Australia.

In October 2016, Melinda released a second Doris album, Melinda Does Doris … Again – The Movie Songs. And in June 2017, she teamed up with Tom Burlinson for another sold-out performance at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall as well as at Melbourne and Brisbane, celebrating the hits of Doris Day and Frank Sinatra in a show called Young At Heart.

Melinda is saddened by Doris’ passing, but proud to present A Farewell To Doris, knowing that Doris’ work will continue to bring joy to audiences of all ages. “Doris was multi-talented, a true triple threat: a world-class singer, dancer and actor. But it is her beautiful spirit that will stay with me. Doris was so likeable and exuded such sincerity and joy and all that is good. There will never be another like her”

Singing her songs and telling her incredible story of resilience has been an absolute honour, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to celebrate her wonderful talent with audiences once again.

A Moogahlin Performing Arts and Sydney Theatre Company Production

THE VISITORS

By Jane Harrison | Directed by Wesley Enoch

On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made. A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them? After its Sydney Theatre Award-winning premiere production at the 2020 Sydney Festival, Muruwari playwright Jane Harrison’s The Visitors will be reworked for this brand new production directed by one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Quandamooka man Wesley Enoch. Co-produced by Moogahlin Performing Arts and Sydney Theatre Company, The Visitors is at once a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful and painful days in Australia’s history, and a hugely entertaining study of how communities respond to change and the unknown.

Legendary rockers Grinspoon are back with Unknown Pretenders!

Unknown Pretenders marks the first new music from the band in 12 years. The track’s unbridled power is quintessentially Grinspoon – heavy riffs, pounding drums, and charismatic vocals from one of Australia’s most highly-regarded front men, Phil Jamieson.

This single ushers in a new era for Grinspoon: their 8th studio album titled whatever, whatever will arrive on August 9. It’s an album of ferocity; an injection of adrenaline that marks a period of rejuvenation and a new peak for the band, who’ve spent recent years touring nationwide celebrating their untouchable seven album-strong discography and legacy to date.

The band have also today announced they’re heading out on an extensive 45 date ‘whatever, whenever, wherever’ tour across the country, kicking off in September, with a fan presale kicking off at 10:00am (local time) Thursday 23 May and general public tickets on sale from 9am (local time) Monday 27 May.

Unknown Pretenders kicks off this new chapter in Grinspoon’s enduring story. With 13 ARIA nominations and 2 wins, countless Platinum accolades and a live reputation that is untouchable, contemporary Australian rock bands regard the band as a blueprint of enduring success. It’s clear with Unknown Pretenders that the band were ready to unleash some pent-up creative energy.

It’s with a curious trepidation but ultimately a feeling of unfulfilled wonderment that we reach into the caverns of our beings for a new journey of recorded endeavours, one which we are proud but tentatively a little scared of releasing”, Phil said when asked about releasing a new single and record.

On the new single, Phil said that “Unknown Pretenders was written in the dawning of the pandemic in a small studio in Adelaide February 2020, with a number of other tunes as well. It’s a magical riffy song about the end of the world and who will actually survive”.

For Unknown Pretenders and whatever, whatever, the band enlisted Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers) as producer, working with him over the last couple of years to shape the sound of this record. Speaking about this, Phil said that; “Oscar is an incredibly talented creative, engineer and producer. We hadn’t worked with an Australian producer for a very long time, and it was a refreshing change. Recording with Oscar became very collaborative, he’s humble and understands the different dynamics within the band”.

Grinspoon’s influence on the Australian scene has extended beyond the success of their early material; the band contributing to the blueprint of Australian rock music that has celebrated the embrace of different sounds and influences.

Excited to hit the road, Phil said, “This thing ain’t for the faint hearted, we’re really trying to get to as many places as possible, it kind of harks back to the olden days of touring; 4 guys in a van with some guitars. With the release of new music we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see Grinners, and we’re going back to some venues we haven’t played in 20 years!”

Phil continues, “To say we’re excited is a massive understatement! Over the last 6 years we have played arenas and stadiums and theaters and what not, and it’s all been tremendous and we have loved every minute of it, but there is nothing like the 3 hour drive after a show, the 9am checkout from the hotel, and the first stop to get a chicko roll and strawberry milk - black coffee for me, I am now an adult. These gigs will be madness - sweaty Tuesdays, taking the day off work on a Wednesday, remembering the reason you go to pubs. Our venues are suffering out there in the regions so we are bringing the show to them. We can’t wait to see you all!”

Unknown Pretenders by Grinspoon is out today. Stream Now.
